I have never decorated for January before, but this year I decided to give it a shot. On a dime. This is what I came up with.
First, these are my mom's ice skates. I painted them turquoise for a decoration for my brother's wedding reception, and then I stole them and took them home to add to my decor. Love them! I already had this white frame. I filled it with a subway art printable from this site. The blue lantern is usually part of my summer outdoor decor and it was the right color. The clock was kind of a silly craft. It was previously a wooden Christmas mitten wreath. I didn't really like it anymore, so I had Daniel pry the wooden mittens off to use for another project. I kept the circle background part thinking it might come in handy sometime. Turns out it did! I just glued blue scrapbook paper onto the circle, inking the edges for a distressed look. The clock face is just a printout I glued in the center, but I can't find the site where I got it. It says, "Happy New Year." (Everything free so far!)
I found this little plate at TJ Maxx in their Christmas clearance for $1.50. The bird was red, but I knew I could paint it blue. And I did! Unfortunately, you can't see the silver/gray tree very well from this angle. I should have taken the picture before putting it on the shelf.
I stuck these glittery snowflakes in some white sand I poured into a glass vase to make them stand up. I bought the snowflakes at JoAnn's after-Christmas clearance sale last year. I think they were $.25 each. I already had the vase and sand.
For final touches, I sprayed some pinecones white and gray and added a little glitter spray. I bought the silver garland at Target's Christmas clearance sale for $1.00. Total cost of my shelf decor: $4.00 plus tax!
I also decorated my dining room table with a blue tablecloth I bought a while back on clearance at Target. I don't usually keep a tablecloth on, but I love the additional color. The tray, mirror, and lantern were already part of my stash. Actually, the lantern used to be black. I think I got it at Ikea. I bought the clock at Taipan a few months ago. I painted some more pinecones in bright colors to put inside the lantern.
Not bad, eh? I love all the colors during a dreary January. It's just perfect.
